Lately...

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

I've been missing in action. I realize that. And I'm super, super sorry! My grandpa recovered, and I was no longer required to care for him but I didn't return to blogging. When it came down to it, I felt like I was spending more time blogging than actually getting out and doing things, and that's not how I wanted to be. I had read a lot of blogging tips about going back and fixing dead links and tagging old photos to make them appear in Google searches and this and that, and while that is all good advice, I felt like I never left the computer. Now I feel like I'm actually doing what I want to do, and I actually would have material for my blog, if I had even bothered to get out my camera! Sadly, all or nothing girl here.

So I shall update you quickly what I've been up to! I had come to the conclusion for the millionth time that I had way too many clothes and that I needed to stopped buying them, especially dresses, since I hardly wear them anymore. I allotted money to different things and different activities. I bought a fancy typewriter (just decoration sadly, since it was only $7 and the keys don't line up) and I also bought a vintage bike! If I end up doing some blogging in the future, it will make a fancy prop, but realistically, it's a way for me to get around. I'm still trying to master riding it, since the last time I rode a bike, I was 12 and regularly crashing into things, including parked cars and my cabin at camp.

I've also been trying super hard to eat better. This was a big step for me, as I ate mostly pizza before. It finally clicked that the reason I might feel sluggish and depressed a lot might have something to do with my diet. I still treat myself here and there (I had a cookie today and I had some KFC on the weekend) but overall, my diet is much healthier and comes out of boxes and packages much less.

I also took up knitting! I was inspired by my friend, Nicole of Mercantile 519 and her rad creations. Also, I've just been getting into vintage more and more (and not just clothing, the way people lived in general) and learning to knit seemed like a natural step to take. I signed up for a beginner's class at Michael's and it went horrible to be honest. My mind could not grasp how to form a stitch, because I couldn't keep left and right straight, over and under kept messing me up and I kept confusing clockwise and counterclockwise. It really isn't that difficult now that I've gotten the hang of it but I like to make things more complicated than they are. I have no idea what this thing is going to be below, it's too narrow to be a scarf or a dish cloth, but look, it's a patch I knitted!

In an effort to not spend money on dresses, I've been spending money on hobbies, better groceries and things for my house. And also... magazines! Sometimes print magazines and sometimes digital ones if the print versions are too expensive (and I seem to love imported ones so that's often the case.) I was already in love with BUST and Vintage Life magazine but I'm newly in love with Frankie magazine, Mollie Makes and Betty magazine. I also have a library account that hooks me up with digital subscriptions to Women's Health, Martha Stewart Living, Mental Floss, Whole Living and dozens of others. I've been a very busy girl. Between reading several books on the go, I can now have dozens magazines on the go too. Huzzah!

Mollie Makes DIY magazine, Betty magazine, BUST magazine Anna Paquin cover, Vintage Life magazine issue 40, Frankie magazine, Australian fashion magazine, UK magazine, feminist magazine, imported magazines, women's magazines, DIY magazines, craft magazines, girly magazines, vintage style magazines

After reading Vintage Life and seeing all the cool vintage theme events going on the UK, I was yearning for something like that to happen in Windsor. When my mom mentioned going to a poodle skirt themed work function, I timidly asked if I could come. My mom had been shopping for an outfit on Modcloth for weeks, but I didn't get the bright idea to ask if I could accompany her until the day before. Luckily, I had items in my closet that worked just fine. I had so much fun! They even had a hula hooping contest, which was right up my alley, considering I had just bought a hula hoop a few weeks earlier. Sadly, my hoop broke 2 revolutions into the actual competition, but in my heart I know who should have rightfully won.

Afterwards, an Elvis impersonator took to the stage and then went up to ladies in the crowd and serenaded then with roses. I was a lucky recipient who received a rose, however, it was a little embarassing because I was in the midst of stuffing my face with popcorn and didn't see him come up beside me. Then suddenly people were taking my picture and I was like, "Noooooo." I don't know the lady in the orange sweater, but look how cute her reaction is. I had to post it!

That's pretty much all I've been up to! I have some other posts planned this week because several businesses have graciously sent me products to review (I was seriously stoked because I didn't think I was important enough for that to happen?) so keep an eye out for that! Until next time!

Wardrobe Wrap Up - Fall 2013

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Wowzers. I almost put Fall 2012! Where has all the time gone? Sometimes I still feel like it's 2006 (or 1998.) To think that it's almost 2014 blows my mind a little bit. This Buzzfeed article sums up how I feel perfectly. It's almost like I didn't realize how quickly time was passing until I sat down and analyzed it (thanks for pointing it all out to me, Buzzfeed!)

Unfortunately though, this fall hasn't felt like fall at all. It's felt more like winter. I know this winter is going to drag on for a long time because it was freezing and snowing in November. I want time to slow down but not in a miserable type of way. I want happy, fun time to be slow. I only want time to slow down if it's the kind that is meant to be savoured!

But enough of that. I complain too much. I feel like I'm turning into my Gramps. Always a cranky bear. Onto the point. I'm here today to post a wardrobe summary of my fall looks, since fall is almost ending.

Some more terrible indoor photos (because I'm a cool cat who forgets to put on the flash) but good news is I match the heels of my shoes to my dress, woot!

purple peter pan collar dress, Mimi Chica dress, black trim and black buttons on purple dress, purple polyester dress, black Mel tangerine shoes, Suzanne Amlin, A Coin For the Well, Windsor Ontario fashion blogger, style blog, black bow ballet flats, jelly shoes, Melissa plastic shoes
Original Post - Polyester Paradise

For my latest outfit post, I wore a very cheaply made dress (it looks like a Hallowe'en costume in person) but it actually photographed pretty well. I might even try to rock it out in public sometime! I just have to remember to give it a good steaming first.

What were your favourite looks that you rocked this season?

Flapper Fun Brought to You by Etsy

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

I've been collecting vintage, specifically antique fashion for a long time. The movie, Titanic is what ignited this interest in me. Initially, I was watching the movie to lust after Leonardo DiCaprio, but eventually it turned into a study of what the characters were wearing. What kind of shoes are they wearing, what kind of jewelry are they wearing, what kind of make-up are they wearing. And the bigger question - how can I emulate this in my own life?! I remember clipping articles in Seventeen and Twist magazine that gave tips on how to get the Titanic look. I still have them saved in a binder!

I actively collected vintage and antique jewelry and occasionally went for the big leagues and sprang for some clothing. I wasn't into stuff you might find at the thrift store (like items from the 1960s-1980s.) I wanted real, authentic Titanic era clothing. Unfortunately, that comes at a price. My parents purchased me a linen "walking suit" from 1910 that cost about $100 one year for Christmas. I remember being pained by the astronomical price. In retrospect, it seems like quite the steal, considering modern linen garments are still super expensive, and while searching for items on Etsy in order to put together this feature, every clothing item from the 1920s, a later time period, was $250+. Unfortunately, the one piece of clothing I chose to include is a replica. I refuse to include in my wishlists anything I wouldn't personally consider buying myself! It doesn't make sense to include $800 dresses, as beautiful as they are, if I don't realistically see anyone buying them, ever.

So basically what I'm trying to get at is my love of vintage fashion started with Titanic era things, stayed focus on exclusively that period for a very love time and then evolved to include everything from Medieval times to the 1980s (I'm still not 100% sold on 90s fashion! I still remember it too well to like it very much.) I especially am into the flapper era at the moment because it includes so many of the beautiful elements of the Edwardian era but the added boldness of Art Deco. It's kind of an old school futurism that will be classic forever.

1920s, 20s, Etsy wishlist, flapper, Roarings 20s, Louise Brooks necklace, The Great Gatsby poster paper cut out, 1920s vintage t strap shoes, celluloid, sparkly, rhinestone, art deco

Clockwise from top left
1) 1920s Wedding Shoes -  coolKittenVintage - $86
2) Retro Style Hair Comb With Golden Shooting Stars - SwellDameBoutique - $25
3) Plastic Flapper Girl Button - ButtonOdyssey - $3
4) Art Deco Celluloid Necklace With Rhinestones - WholeheartedVintage - $42
5) Made to Order Flapper Day Dress - UnBaulePienoDiSogni - $106
6) 1920 Vintage Life Magazine Cover - RosiesVintagePress - $18
7) Architectural Art Deco Statement Necklace - mylavaliere - $27
8) The Great Gatsby Mini Book Necklace - BunnyHell - $25
9) Aynsley Pink Tea Cup and Saucer China Set - ShoponSherman - $99
10) Louise Brooks Stainless Steel Portrait Necklace - FableAndFury - $29
11) The Great Gatsby Papercut Silhouette Movie Poster - thedaydreamprincess - $25

I didn't even like The Great Gatsby and I REALLY want that poster in the middle. Is that crazy? Probably?

That's all for me! Talk soon!

Vintage (and Black Friday!) Edition of Thrifty Thursday

Thursday, November 28, 2013

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I hate the cold weather. I had read earlier in the week that it was supposed to warm up today, so I had planned to do a big photoshoot for today and get a bunch of outfits photographed so I could have some material for some upcoming entries. Instead it snowed. Since I had all my outfits planned out and packed up (was spending some time at my parents' house since my grandma just flew in from Florida) I decided to go ahead and photograph them anyway. Why dilly dally around? I can't wait for winter to warm up, or else I might be waiting forever! Unfortunately, not being a seasoned photographer at all, I failed to understand just how bad indoor lighting is. I'd heard rumours for a long time but never fully understood until I had something to compare it to. Yeesh. Sorry these pics look like they were taken on a cell phone but I tried my best!

I got this awesome dress for $10 (including shipping from Hawaii!) from my friend Camille of The Corner Sweetheart. I don't know if it's a vintage dress or an Asian dress that's fronting like it's vintage, but either way, it's super adorable. I got the shoes and bracelet on my most recent trip to Value Village. I'm not so sure about the shoes though. As cute as they are, they are too small. They are vintage Tender Tootsies and are marked a size 8 but they feel closer to a 7. I know this because I parade around in size 7 shoes. Often.

In other thrifty news, many online stores have begun their Black Friday festivities early! Retro Wedding Fun Time

Saturday, November 16, 2013

This past weekend, I attended an out of town wedding (okay, slightly out of town, it was about 45 minutes away from me in Chatham, Ontario) with my boyfriend Logan. It was the first time I met his extended family and it was quite a hoot! I didn't take pictures of them (because that would be weird) but they are a bunch of pranksters. I see where Logan gets it from. They spent most of the night pulling my leg and laughing at how gullible I am.

Later in the night, we retreated back to where we were staying, the bride, Stacy's house (or was it her husband to be Donnie's house? I wasn't sure. Either way it doesn't matter.) The ladies stayed inside and drank copious amounts of wine (and juiceboxes for me) and the men partied outside in the shed. However, the one bridesmaid, Melinda is in my camp and is not a frequent drinker. She uh... got tanked and went outside to try to party with the gentlemen. My boyfriend, a bouncer, tried to throw her over his shoulder bouncer style, and being too drunk himself, dropped her into a bunch of tools. So the matron of honor had a black eye for the big day. Oh, and my boyfriend also fell asleep completely naked (being drunk, he lost his clothing piece by piece throughout the night. I urged him to at least sleep in his boxers but he didn't seem concerned.) Sleeping on the basement floor in an open area with 3 teenage children, girlfriends sleeping over, and bridesmaids crashing for the night made for lots of laughs in the morning... because I'm a total covers hog.

Now for the wedding itself, I was in LOVE with the location. It was at the Retro Suites and the place is totally up my alley. I took a few pics but realized mine are really crappy compared to what the Retro Suites has posted on their Facebook and business page so I decided to borrow some of their's. Check this place out!

We actually never saw the front (that's the back pictured above) but it looks pretty cool.

My boyfriend and I are thinking maybe for our anniversary next year we'll go here. They have a bunch of different themed rooms and it seems really fun. Who would think that someone would intentionally travel to Chatham?

I don't know about you, but at weddings I take tons of selfies. I just don't know what to do while I'm sitting there. I look like crap in these. I didn't even try to edit them to make myself look good. I wanted to show how tired I was. I had my dog earlier in the week and he's a pro at keeping me up. So no sleep while he was visiting.  I didn't get much sleep with the drunken shenanigans (my boyfriend crawled into bed at about 5am and then the ladies were up at 7am to start getting their hair done.) I was so, so tired. But I'm pretty sure I always am at wedding. Most weddings, I sneak out and nap in the car.

I amused myself for awhile with the jelly beads from the centerpieces (what IS this?) and then looked terrified when my boyfriend caught me. Haha. I think this should be my Facebook profile picture. I still have my Wednesday Addam's look posted as an homage to Hallowe'en.

Logan Payette

We didn't take many photos of the bride and groom (seriously, most of the camera were of my boobs.) I am narcassistic. And Logan's a pervert.
