I'm finishing up my flapper week with a flapper print dress! I was originally going to do a flapper inspired outfit, but then I received this Myrtlewood dress in the mail (one that I had been lusting after in my previous post "Modcloth's Bea & Dot and Myrtlewood Have Stolen my Heart") and I decided to model a new outfit, instead of just re-creating a previous one.

I decided to include this post under Splurgy Sunday because it falls under a splurge for me! The dress retails at $89.99 but I found a large on ebay for $50 and altered it down to my size. Luckily for you readers though, it's currently on sale on Modcloth for $44.99! Total steal. It's a great dress. The print has a very subtle gold shimmer and when you descend stairs, the skirt very gently puffs around you. You can't help but feel like a princess.

(Shhh, don't mind the red eye. When I went to fix it, my editor thought my eyebrows wanted to be green for some reason.)

I also decided to try out some new make-up I got. It's 1920s style mascara by Besame. It's pretty darn nifty! It's mascara, eyeliner and eyebrow colour in one. It's cake style and activated with water. This is right up my alley because I only wear mascara 4-5 times a month. Tube mascaras dry out before I get my money's worth (although I try to milk them for all I can!) I tried this product out in all 3 areas. It's a little tricky on the eyelashes (it goops right at the lashline, so you have no choice but to wear it as eyeliner as well) but I love it as eyeliner. It's really subtle and doesn't smear. I might even wear it daily. And this is coming from a girl who wears eyeliner once or twice a year. It was a little dark for my brows, but I bought it in black. It might be better if I bought the brown colour. I might still keep using it, because again, it doesn't smear. My brow powders never stay in place. It's just a little bold and definitely makes my brows look way thicker than they actually are.

Also, while applying it, this tends to happen if you put the mascara on first (since the spoolie has mascara on it.) Will have to remember to put it on last next time.

Vintage (and Black Friday!) Edition of Thrifty Thursday

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I hate the cold weather. I had read earlier in the week that it was supposed to warm up today, so I had planned to do a big photoshoot for today and get a bunch of outfits photographed so I could have some material for some upcoming entries. Instead it snowed. Since I had all my outfits planned out and packed up (was spending some time at my parents' house since my grandma just flew in from Florida) I decided to go ahead and photograph them anyway. Why dilly dally around? I can't wait for winter to warm up, or else I might be waiting forever! Unfortunately, not being a seasoned photographer at all, I failed to understand just how bad indoor lighting is. I'd heard rumours for a long time but never fully understood until I had something to compare it to. Yeesh. Sorry these pics look like they were taken on a cell phone but I tried my best!

I got this awesome dress for $10 (including shipping from Hawaii!) from my friend Camille of The Corner Sweetheart. I don't know if it's a vintage dress or an Asian dress that's fronting like it's vintage, but either way, it's super adorable. I got the shoes and bracelet on my most recent trip to Value Village. I'm not so sure about the shoes though. As cute as they are, they are too small. They are vintage Tender Tootsies and are marked a size 8 but they feel closer to a 7. I know this because I parade around in size 7 shoes. Often.

I recently opened an account on Trend Trunk (it's sort of a Canadian version of Poshmark) so don't be too surprised if you see these babies pop up there in the next few days!

Modcloth's Bea & Dot and Myrtlewood Have Stolen My Heart

I'm an exclusives snob. I'll admit it. I love to shop vintage because the item I pick out is one of a kind and I love to buy limited edition things so it's less likely that my friends will have the same thing. I'm not the type of girl that will see my friends with certain things and will want the same stuff. If I see someone else with something, it makes me NOT want it. I don't want to be like anyone else. For instance, I bought this really cute Reverse dress from Urban Outfitters a year and a half ago (that's an approximation but I'm pretty sure that's when I bought it.)

Within a few months, I saw several girls around town wearing them. I complimented them on their good taste, but I never wore mine again. This style has pretty much taken over and now I want nothing to do with it. I guess it's my way of rebelling. I once went to a birthday party at a club in Detroit called City Club. The style of the club is kind of sexy gothic. Most people wear black and very little clothing. I do have items in my closet that fit this style. However, just to go against the grain, I wore jeans and a pink shirt. I dress how I want!!! It's almost like I intentionally dress to stick out like a sore thumb.

However, back to the point. Dressing in Modcloth's Bea & Dot and Myrtlewood won't make you stick out like a sore thumb. But you will definitely look unique! I've been asking on Modcloth's Facebook for a long time for them to put a separate "Exclusive" section and they finally did. I couldn't be happier. I actually had it bookmarked for awhile because I tended to buy those pieces - I knew if my friends didn't know about Modcloth, that I for sure would be the only one with these items. I tended to favour Be the Buyer items (since those have always been Modcloth exclusives) because I knew they wouldn't show up at discount shops like Winners (Canada's version of Ross and TJ Maxx.) I told you, exclusives snob! I love feeling special.

Being a board game lover, I really loved this dice printed dress from Bea & Dot. It's one of those dresses that looks really adorable from far away too, when you can't identify what the print is.

Another dress I really love from Bea&Dot (for the same reason - fun, silly print but that looks pretty and vintage-y from far away) is the Rock and Bowl Dress.

I just love that colour of green. It just seems so retro. I'm not much of a bowler (I place dead last every time!) but this dress is still perfection in my books. Available at Modcloth.

My last pick from Bea&Dot is this cute dachshund sweater. I originally thought it was by Louche (they have a ton of cute sweaters) but I'm happy to see Modcloth jumping on the cute sweater train. I'm super into cute sweaters lately. I have the kitty eyeglass one by Louche and I think this doggy one would make a nice companion.

Everybody needs sweaters like this because even when it's cold outside, they warm your heart! (At least that's what I try to tell myself.) Available at Modcloth.

The other brand Modcloth has created is called Myrtlewood. They have some lovely pieces as well (although overall, I'd say Bea&Dot is a little bit more quirky but both lines have some really stand out pieces.) I've been eyeing the Maraschino Cheery Dress for awhile. The colour is bold but sophisticated and the details are subtly pretty.

Another really pretty one (it's totally my colour sheme!) is the Chalk of the Town Dress

I saved my absolute favourite for last. I'm buying this dress. I'm not sure how I'm going to afford it but I'm getting this dress somehow.

Reveling in Rachel Antonoff

Rachel Antonoff is easily my favourite designer. It's the only designer my boyfriend knows the name of. That says something! I've gushed about her to him so much that he knows her by name. I have 2 of her dresses and would love to buy more. *Note - it was a very windy day, hence the flipped collar and crazy hair!

Acquiring this dress was a bit of an ordeal however. I had just gotten a job at a pizza place last summer, but it was only 2 days a week (about $160 weekly.) I was also saving up for a trip to British Columbia and was on a spending freeze. I had come across this dress in a size 6 (my size!) in on an online swap group for $250. EEK! Not so much the price, because it's totally worth it, but just the unlikelihood! I e-mailed the girl right away and asked if she would take payment installments but it had sold. NO. I was crushed. Then in February, I came across one in a size 2 on eBay. Totally not my size, and it actually had some stains down the front of it. They were even visible in the eBay photos.

I have a bit of an active imagination so I try not to think about what it could be. But... my dress! For $120! I still had no money, so I asked if she could hold it until I got paid. Then, ta da! Mine. I just have to do a lot of wiggling to get into it. In my opinion, if it zips, it fits! I don't believe in sizes. Sizes schmizes.

Crazy part was, I saw another one listed a few months later (in a size 2 again!) and I also bid on that one. I'm a wee bit of a nutter methinks.

I originally was going to style it with wine tights and Ferragamos (I literally bought the exact outfit that calivintage wore) but what's the point? I'm not breaking any new ground by wearing the exact same thing another blogger wore (although it does look really nice styled that way.) So I tried this green tights look. It's a bit Christmas-y but I think I like it. Maybe I'll wear it for the holidays. To the bar at least. This dress is way too short to wear around my family! I guess that's what happens when you buy things a couple sizes too small.
